Research indicates that a child's most productive learning years are from birth to five years of age. This fact underscores the importance of quality child care to lifelong social, emotional, and intellectual development.
IMH supports quality child care through our program of Child Care Grants. Grants are available in amounts up to $10,000 for the purchase of toys, books, equipment, furniture, materials, etc., and up to $5,000 for training or conference attendance for directors and staff members, the purchase of curriculum materials for the center, or training in the use of curriculum materials. Centers may apply for either or both of these grants.
Child Care Grants are available to any Class A center in Orleans Parish, non-profit or for-profit, that provides subsidized child care to 30% or more of their children, has been open for at least a year, and has achieved at least one star from the Louisiana Quality Start program.
After Katrina, IMH grants for child care focused on rebuilding and restoring child care capacity that had been lost from the storm. Beginning in 2009, however, child care grants now focus on improving the quality of the care being offered. Applications for the purchase of equipment and materials must be intended to assist a center to improve its Quality Start Rating. |
